Requiem for Raymo is a solo exhibition (weekly performance) by gay artist Austin Hearne that presents a fictional scenario of obsession transmuting from hate to love/lust. Austin Hearne’s object of desire is Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, an American prelate who was completely against any relaxation of Church attitudes towards gay people.
Hearne creates a fantasy scenario where Burke and himself live together as a couple in perfect harmony. But with the fictionalised death of Burke, Hearne’s love becomes unrequited and results in a paralyzing grief. Hearne creates his melodrama through a complex installation that includes large-scale photographic works with sculptural elements, bespoke wallpaper, and video.
My Thoughts... I was very impressed with Hearne’s ability to create environments that transport the visitor to both, the dark thoughts of his mind, to the vaults of a cathedral. The wailing audio echoing throughout and smells of incense wafting around the space really take you to that imaginary place successfully. It was my first experience of performance art - it was impressive to see how impactful it can be.

My Thoughts...
The vibrancy and energy of this exhibition at the RHA was breath taking. The colours and effective use of various media really inspired me. From Jane Fogarty’s Egg Tempura on paper, to Leah Hewson’s Acrylic and lacquer on Khadi paper, they are truly inspirational artists at the top of their game.
As shown in the close up photographs of Hewson’s, ‘Blow Out Series II, #6’, I was intrigued by her use of colours and textures to achieve a neon, graffiti effect. It’s a method I would like to experiment with in future, as I adore fluorescent colours when used as an accent.
Leah Hewson's colour palettes are of great interest to me in terms of my own brand identity. Pops of bright accents against rich shades give a sophisticated, yet dynamic style that I like.

My Thoughts...
As part of my Mind map for my professional development research, I realised book design is an area that I would like to look into further. My father was a printer by trade so I spent a lot of my childhood in the print environment, seeing how layouts were formed and created. Michael Kane's linocut designs caught my attention, as this is a method I enjoyed in Term 1.
The resulting prints are so effective, I especially like the 2-colour prints, like his Long Lankin piece.
